Designing the Future at IIT Bombay

We often rush to build solutions before we truly understand the problem. My time at the IIT Bombay Design Thinking Workshop was a transformative deep dive into the diverse landscapes of design and the power of human centered communication.

In just a short time, I explored everything from the sleek lines of automotive design to the psychological impact of colour. Here are the highlights of my experience:


1. Automotive Design: Thinking Beyond the Road

Interestingly, our exploration of automotive design took us to the water. We studied the intricate parts of boats, analyzing their form and function. To put theory into practice, I built a 3D model using cardboard and mixed materials—a hands-on lesson in structural integrity and buoyancy.


2. The Power of Colour and Consumer Psychology

I learned that colour is never "just" an aesthetic choice; it is a tool that evokes specific human emotions. By experimenting with a wide palette, I demonstrated how colour influences consumer choices and defines the personality of a product.


3. Animation and Form: From Clay to Motion

In the animation studio, I explored the evolution of the medium—from the tactile charm of stop-motion to the complexity of claymation. Building my own figures out of clay allowed me to understand how physical form can be manipulated to tell a story or express character.


4. The Core of Design Thinking: Prototyping for the Future

The heart of the workshop was the Design Thinking challenge. Using the fundamental principle of Empathy, I designed a toothbrush prototype specifically for my "future self." This project required me to synthesize the entire design cycle: empathizing with user needs, defining the problem, and iterating on a physical solution. I also applied these skills to develop a unique lamp prototype.


5. A Glimpse into the Future

Tours of the high-tech facilities including the Automation Lab, Future Lab, and the CMF (Colour, Material, and Finish) Lab showed me where the industry is heading. These spaces are where theoretical concepts meet cutting-edge technology.


Key Takeaway

The most important lesson I brought home is that design isn’t just for designers it is a universal tool for problem-solving. Moving forward, I plan to integrate these methods into my own projects, ensuring that I always understand the "why" before I build the "what."
